As some of Fitzroy Gardens’ avenues decline, difficult decisions are being made about their protection, renewal and replacement in this well-loved park. Aerial photos map the changes in the park over time, and these have been used to inform the replacement strategy of avenues in the north part of the gardens. Like an episode of ‘Time Team’, the arrangement and spacing of existing avenues have been carefully measured, and the planting strategies of previous custodians inferred. New avenue plantings closely match the layout of old, and lost specimen trees have been re-instated. All of this requires the cooperation and approval of Heritage Victoria.
